Mary Clarkson Labour: Marston
Oxford City Council Cabinet Member for Culture and the City Centre
I support the aims of your Manifesto for Local Democracy.
In terms of cross-party working, I do this whenever I think that this will achieve things of broad public interest. I worked on a very successful cross-party City Council Group on the Covered Market several years ago which still informs the City Council’s management of the Market today. In addition, I work closely with Cllr Suzanne Bartington, the Conservative County Council Cycling Champion on cycling infrastructure in the city and with local Green activists on biodiversity in Marston.
In normal times outside the run-up to elections, I hold three weekly street surgeries when I call round on a cluster of streets in Marston, then feed back to residents a few weeks later with an update to those streets. In addition, I hold a monthly Saturday morning drop in session at the local community pub, which is well supported. I aim to send out a newsletter 3-4 times a year.
I attend meetings of Residents Associations, the Parish Council, community groups and church groups and try to engage with all sections of the Marston community.
I ask residents for suggestions for spending my ward budget through my ward newsletter, but also influenced by requests from individuals and groups throughout the year. The ward newsletter updates residents on how the budget has been spent.
I am keen to work on the findings of the Citizens Assembly on Climate Change with local activists.
