The ‘Oxford Citizens’ Assembly Network’ (OxCAN) was formed in January 2019 as an off-shoot of the Oxford Democracy Café.
Its original purpose was to build support and udnerstanding for a citizens' assembly on the climate emergency and how CAs can help do democaracy differently.
On 28 January 2019 Oxford City Council agreed to ‘join other Councils in declaring a Climate Emergency’ and ‘encourage this Council to establish a Citizens’ Assembly made up of a representative range of Oxford citizens to establish the facts and make recommendations for our city’.
Oxford City Council established an independent advisory group to provide governance and oversight of the citizens' assembly and ODC was represented on this advisory group by a member of OxCAN.
Oxford's Citizens' Assembly on Climate Change took place over the weekends of 28th & 29th Sept and 19th & 20th Oct 2019.
OxCAN have produced a summary of learning from the Citizens' Assembly which can be found below OxCAN Summary of Learning from Oxford Citizens' Assembly
